Willie Smith’s releases latest single variety showcase
One of the world’s most famous varieties of cider apple is being showcased by Tasmanian producer Willie Smith’s in its latest limited-edition single variety offering.
The Huon Valley award-winning producer has developed a deep golden drop of cider using the Kingston Black apple, which originates from Somerset in Britain.
Willie Smith’s annually produces a limited number of rare ciders as part of its single variety program, and this is the second incarnation of the Kingston Black offering, after a successful initial launch in 2016.
Head Cider Maker Dr Tim Jones said Kingston Black had big boots to fill, after its fellow 2017 Vintage single variety, Somerset Redstreak, won Willie Smith’s first international award at the International Cider Awards in Spain last November.
“The single varietal program is driven by hand selecting single varietal ferments that
standout in quality and varietal expression,” Dr Jones said.
“Like in Craft Beer where you see many single hop editions, the Willie Smith’s cider
making team have been able to develop very special complex and intense ciders
using just one variety of apple. As crop yields increase each year it has been
especially rewarding to be able to introduce more Australian drinkers to the
wonderful world of Cider apples!”
“The Kingston Black apple is one of the world’s most famous traditional cider apple
varieties.”
“Our 2016 Kingston Black was very well received, and we believe the 2017 vintage
will be just as popular.”
Kingston Black is available at the home of Willie Smith’s, the Willie Smith’s Apple
Shed, 2064 Huon Highway, Grove or selected outlets and restaurants Australia wide.
