WA's Otherside Brewing to open second venue
Western Australia’s Otherside Brewing Co announced this week that the brewery will open a second venue in Fremantle.
Mooted to open in March next year, the new space has been described as a cultural entertainment venue and microbrewery.
The redevelopment of the historic Artillery Drill Hall, once a convict garden, is located in the centre of Fremantle and has been in planning since 2015, with construction commencing in November 2016.
Lead by Otherside Brewing Co’s parent company Triple-1-Three, the new multi-million dollar venue will include a microbrewery and 550-capacity entertainment hall, co-working spaces, artist studios, food trucks and catering and beer gardens.
Developers have confirmed that the multi-faceted space will be called the Freo.Social.
Otherside Director and Co-Founder David Chitty, who comes from a music festival background, said that what started as a beer brewed for festivals has grown rapidly as a brand since its inception three years ago.
From humble gypsy-brewing origins and what started as brewing “just for fun”, became something that warranted a permanent facility.Otherside now boasts a production brewery and brewpub in the Perth suburb of Myaree.
It’s new secondary venue is anticipated to become Fremantle’s new social and cultural hub.
“The venue we’re doing in Freo, we changed our thought process a bit and thought well let’s put entertainment and music and beer and food all together into one venue where it’s like a mini festival everyday,” he explained.
The hug, big dome-shaped interior will encompass an entertainment area as well as a brewing shed to house a microbrewery and a brewery yard.It will also have two outdoor areas, one for food trucks and the other for a general beer garden and children’s playground.
Chitty said that the brewery shed and yard will be the first part of the space to open to the public in March. The entertainment hall is set to open the following month, with artists already on the books.
Award-winning architecture firm Benson Studio is overseeing the design. Studio Principal Michael Benson told the media that the design had been carefully curated to be inclusive of locals and tourists, artists and music lovers, while also responding to the needs of the historic building and the project’s unique business model.
“An interesting weave of heritage and contemporary hospitality design will help revitalise this corner of Fremantle while celebrating the cultural scene of Western Australia,” Benson said.
Freo.Social will be located at 84 McCoy Street in Myaree, Fremantle.
Brewery openings are presented bySpark Breweries and Distilleries, the finest in-venue and production brewing systems available, with local design and support.
