Two Birds Brewing celebrates seven years with three new beers

Two Birds Brewing is celebrating its seventh anniversary with the Festival of the Bird.

Although others have followed their lead, co-owners Danielle Allen and Jayne Lewis were pioneers when they launched Australia’s first female-owned brewery seven years ago. To celebrate their milestone,Allen and Lewis will host 17 events right across Australia, showcasing three new-release beers as well as some old favourites.

“It’s been seven years of hard work, but seeing the growth of Two Birds has also been one of the best things I’ve ever done,” Lewis says.

When asked about their plans for the future, Lewis wants to do more of the same.

“Just putting more beers out, and just doing everything that we can to spread the word about good beer, as far and wide as we can.”

The Spotswood brewery has been operating since 2014. Lewis says she’s always felt that the western suburbs were a real growth area.

“It seemed like a thriving little community and like the right place for a brewery.”

The three new beers include Two Birds seventh anniversary brew, a collaboration brew with London’s Fourpure Brewing Co and a second collaboration brew with London’s Wild Card Brewery.

Two Birds birthday brew draws on the traditional seventh anniversary gift of copper. Its Bright Copper Kettles Rye IPA is available both on tap and in 500ml bottles. The 6.4 per cent IPA has a complex, caramel-driven malt base and spicy, tropical hop notes from a mix of Slovenian and Australian hops, including Simcoe, Styrian Dragon, and Chinook.

Like many of Two Birds beers, Bright Copper Kettles was inspired by a song. Its name and the white geese that fly with the moon on their wings depicted on the bottle, are references to My Favourite Things from The Sound of Music. Lewis wore warm-woollen mittens and a white dress with blue-satin sashes to the Two Birds birthday party over the weekend.

Lewis says that she really likes those little discovery things in the brands.

Two Birds two London collaborations were brewed during Good Beer Week 2018.

Its collaboration with Fourpure Brewing Co, as part of its Continental Collaboration series, gave way to the Nugget Session Pale Ale. Formerly of Fourpure Brewing, Two Birds brewer Jaime Clowes said she was excited to create an Australian hopped session beer, wanting it to be perfect for drinking whether you prefer AFL or the Premier League.

Two Birds collaboration with Jaega Wise of Wild Card Brewery resulted in a double dry hopped double IPA called Wild Bird. The 8.4 per cent beer is the biggest beer that either brewery has ever released. Wild Bird exhibits lingering tropical bitterness and deep notes of pine thanks to a hefty dose of Australian Cascade and Galaxy hops.

“The Festival of the Bird is a great chance for Two Birds fans to get involved with the birthday, no matter how far they are from our home in Spotswood,” Allen says.

The Festival of the Bird will runfrom June 14 to July 25. Details.
