Survey shows men like bland beer with plain food

CUB has released the following results of a spurious survey designed to support their latest beer.

As the beer is only available in Queensland for now, readers elsewhere in Australia will need to imagine what it tastes like…it tastes just like XXXX Summer Bright Lager, which it was designed to emulate but which had a 12 month head start. Like a modern Australian politician it is bland and innocuous and its only goal is not to offend anyone. If the Aussie bloke is drinking it, it’s not surprising chips, snack food, pizza and peanuts are his popular food matches with it.

Survey shows the Aussie bloke is alive, well and living in Queensland

The 2011 Queensland man might be sporting a more metrosexual look but a recent survey has shown underneath the manicured hands and manscaped backs is an Aussie bloke who will take a beer and barbie over a beef bourguignon every time.

In a survey commissioned by Great Northern Brewing Co., hundreds of men from across the State were asked what they preferred to eat with their beer and what they thought of when they saw beer.

Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) General Manager Cameron Levick said Queensland men might be more discerning with their fashion and footwear, but when it came to their appetite they were easy to please.

“Our insatiable appetite for DIY cuisine these days means some blokes can whip up a risotto or chocolate cake from scratch, but when they drink beer they aren’t keen on anything fussy,” Mr Levick said.

“Almost 40% of the men surveyed by Great Northern said a steak off the BBQ was the meal of choice with a cold beer.

“If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, then the key to snagging a bloke in the man drought is to serve him a barbecue steak.

“Given more blokes are coming out as self-confessed foodies, we expected the responses to be a little more cultural and culinary, but not even Thai food rated a mention. The traditional Sunday roast didn’t make the cut either.”

The top five things on a Queensland man’s beer drinking menu are:

1. Steak, BBQ (38.5%)
2. Chips (16%)
3. Snack food (8.5%)
4. Pizza (7%)
5. Peanuts (6%)

Mr Levick said the survey also showed that mateship was predominantly on the minds of Queensland men when they thought about cracking a coldie.

“Close to 40% of men surveyed said time out with their friends, watching sport, spending the day fishing or on the beach camping spring to mind when looking at a beer.

“You only have to look at the number of people who rolled up their sleeves and pitched in to help friends, or even complete strangers, during the recent flood and cyclone clean-up, to understand how important mateship is in Queensland.

Mr Levick said it was interesting the survey responses were the same for men whether they were living in Brisbane or in Far North Queensland.

“Being an Aussie bloke is part of our genetic makeup and has nothing to do with geography. There is still plenty of macho under the metro,” he said.

“The quintessential 2011 Queensland man may appear more polished but in his heart he’s just a typical bloke who enjoys a BBQ and a cold beer.

“Our latest brew Great Northern was created to capture the simple, laid-back approach to life in the sun; a beer made by Queenslanders for Queenslanders.”

Great Northern Brewing Co. was named in honour of CUB’s first ever Queensland based brewing operation, the Great Northern Brewery in Cairns acquired in 1931.
