Stone & Wood release Garden Ale

Comment: [Matt Kirkegaard]

A Tweet I made about getting excited about the slow appearance of midstrength craft beer generated quite a bit of discussion recently. It seems to me that while there’s a lot to be said for a well-made big and ballsy IPA or an Imperial Stout with dessert, I still like the idea of having a beer after work or with lunch on a weekend without being unable to drive after, or falling asleep on the couch. If I am going to have a midstrength, I want it to be a good midstrength – one with flavour. Midstrength craft beer is an exciting aspect of the market and an area of the market that I suspect will see craft beer really take root in the mainstream beer market…

2014 Garden Ale Release

Ella’s Garden

Garden AlePicked in the Southern sunshine, Ella is the stand out hop that gives this year’s Garden Ale its distinctive aromatic character.

With our Garden Ale, we’ve always had the intention of adding different things from the garden, however after trialling a number of hop varieties from HPA’s hop gardens in Bushy Park in Tasmania, we settled on using Ella all on her own.

Brewed with a blend of pale and crystal malts, and both kettle and dry hopped with Ella, a new world hop variety, our Garden Ale has a citrus fruit aromatic balanced with a clean malt character and an easy bitter finish.

At 3.8% alc/vol, we brewed it for those sundrenched afternoons spent in a beer garden where a sessionable beer is the perfect excuse to stay longer.

Garden Ale is available on tap in good pubs – most of them with excellent beer gardens – and in 500ml bottles at select bottle shops across Australia, meaning that it can be enjoyed in any garden including your own or even Ella’s…
