Rogue Wave to host Pink Boots brew day
Pink Boots Society Australia will be hosting a brew day at Rogue Wave Brewery, Aireys Inlet on Saturday 18 November.
Led by Rogue Wave brewer Brittany Aikman, this community day will see female brewers of the Geelong and Surf Coast region unite to brew a beer with hop hash, a seasonal hop option only recently available in Australia.
Brittany attended the 2017 Australian Craft Brewers Conference as a winner of one of Pink Boots Society’s scholarships. As part of the scholarship application, Brittany identified her personal gains for attending the conference, as well as how she would pay it forward and help other female beer professionals. This brew day is the outcome of this. Brittany is particularly excited to be using the new ingredient and help educate those attending on the brew process and how she expects the hop hash to influence the beer, given it is so new to most brewers in Australia.
Brittany has also created her IPA recipe to especially reflect the local region. The Surf Coast is represented by the refreshing citrus characters and the Otways represented by the pine characters, both derived from the Columbus hops. Pale, Vienna and Wheat malts will provide further flavour and body.
Eighteen kegs are expected from this brew day, which will be available at a later date in Geelong and Melbourne. Please follow our Facebook page for updates.
Hop hash is a highly resinous by-product of the hop pelletising process. It used to be discarded as waste by all hop processors until it was realised that this by-product was actually full of powerful hop oils and could also be used to make beer. A number of hop processors have now made hop hash available commercially but, because it has to be scraped off and packed only at pelletising time, it is a limited and seasonal product.
Pink Boots Society is an international not-for-profit to support and empower women beer professionals, advancing their careers through education. We welcome any enquiries about the society and membership.
