Newcastle’s Modus Brewing and Absolutely A.i. collaborate to create the world’s best beer, fully designed by artificial intelligence.

Newcastle is experiencing a golden era of beer. We find ourselves at the epicentre of incredible craft and independent beer of the Hunter region with new breweries opening in Newcastle constantly. Ahead of the curve, Newy Locals and Champion Independent Brewers Modus Brewing, have partnered with Absolutely A.i., a leader in artificial intelligence design, to create a new and unique beer designed entirely by artificial intelligence.

The limited release beer, named “Neural Network” was born from a deep discovery into artificial intelligence, asking the A.i. program ‘How do we make the world’s best beer?’. This led to a beer completely designed by A.i. from top to bottom including; proposed recipe, label design, name, and tasting notes.

The AI algorithm produced a proposed recipe from its understanding of what makes the perfect East Coast IPA based on hundreds of thousands of reviews. Featuring a balance of sweet malt and hoppy bitterness with notes of grapefruit, orange, and passion fruit. The label of the beer was also generated by an AI program, and features a design that is inspired by the algorithm’s interpretation of the taste and aroma of the beer fused with the heart of Modus culture and the beer’s unique machine learning origin.

According to Modus Brewing’s multi award winning but humble head brewer, the taste of the beer is both complex and refreshing, with a unique flavour profile only found in an East Coast IPA. “The AI-brew is a testament to the power of current technology and innovation in the brewing industry,” said head brewer, Cameron Mackey. “We are excited to be exploring this technology. Satisfyingly, for me and our team, working with Absolutely A.i. and what I thought would be a robotic tyrant, was far from the case. We have a beer recipe and direction that is very exciting to share with our fans as a limited release. The A.i. has definitely impressed with its knowledge and understanding. Nothing can replace the human element and need for natural senses in brewing.”
