Introducing our Single Batch Pilsner

This autumn, our single batch is a refreshing European-style Pilsner

Our Single Batch Pilsner is handcrafted and slow-brewed in one batch of only one thousand litres. It is made using only four ingredients; rainwater, malted barley, yeasts and hops. We have sourced quality ingredients from our backyard and around the globe. We have captured fresh rainwater from the skies to make this full flavoured and freshly brewed Single Batch Pilsner.

Until the 1840’s, almost all beer consumed in Europe was top-fermented ales of varying taste and consistency. In an attempt to improve the quality and consistency of their beer in a competitive market, brewers in Bavaria in the 1830’s and 1840’s were experimenting with fermenting beer in cool underground caves using a bottom fermenting (lager) yeast and the result was a clearer, crisper beer.

The Pilsner style originates from a small town called Pilsen (or Plzen) in the Czech Republic. The officials of Pilsen founded a city-owned brewery in 1839 and recruited a young Bavarian brewer Josef Groll. Josef combined the new Bavarian brewing technique, paler malts and Saaz noble hops with Pilsen’s soft water to create what is now known as Pilsner Urquell.

This clear golden beer was regarded as a sensation at the time, it was totally distinct from the dark and murky beers that came before it.

Our single batch Pilsner is a fresh and crisp sessionable lager. It is bright gold in colour with floral aromatics from the handpicked fresh, green hops from our small plot we grow next to the brewery. Our Pilsner is well balanced, with subtle fruity characters and a cleansing bitterness to finish.
