A product from WA cidermaker Funk Cider has been recalled over unintended secondary fermentation issues and concerns that it may exceed marked alcohol content.

375ml cans of Perth Cider are being recalled, having been for sale individually and as part of the Drink West Drink Best mixed carton available at liquor stores, hotels, restaurants and cafes in WA.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) said that the recall is due to the potential for alcohol in the product to exceed the alcohol content marked on the cans.

FSANZ said there was an increased possibility the can would ‘pop’ open due to secondary fermentation in products which can result in excess alcohol and carbonation, which has been an issue for a number of brewers across the country.

In a Facebook post, Funk Cider announced that they had informed the Western Australian Brewers Association about the issues, and it has now been removed from the case and the price adjusted accordingly.

“The team at funk cider regret to inform our valued customers that we are recalling all Perth Cider 375ml cans from the batch with best before date of 03rd April 2021 effective immediately, due to potential for fermentation,” it said.

It recommended customers dispose of the product immediately, and posted disposal instructions on its website.
