Beer, the musical

Beer Diva, Kirrily Waldhorn

Beer has never been regarded as the most culturally sophisticated of drinks but that could be set to change if Australia’s first lady of beer has anything to do with it.

In what could well be a world first, Australia’s Beer Diva, Kirrily Waldhorn, is taking her beer education classes from the confines of bars and restaurants and putting it on stage in an interactive beer experience.

“The reality is that despite its growth in recent years beer is still misunderstood”, Kirrily said.

“The extraordinary complexities and diverse styles that beer can offer are often unappreciated, whilst we happily muse on the lexicon of wine.”

“Beer is often perceived as the domain of overweight, aggressive, bearded, belching, football-loving men. Not an image that is likely to sway foodies, sophisticates and women towards wider experimentation and adoption.

“Prejudices and stereotypes surrounding this nectar continue to unjustly prevail. It’s time to tear down the wall of misconception!” she said.

In a stage show that Kirrily describes as part ‘theatre, part sensory indulgence’, she promises to take the audience on a journey of discovery in five acts that will stimulate all of their senses through projected animation, original music, and live performance and sampling five distinctive styles of beer.

While the concept of beer on stage is a little hard picture, Kirrily describes the show as “a joyous experience – punctuated by myth-busting facts, history, global culture and philosophy – will leave you stimulated, entertained, and enriched by an unexpected education.”

Kirrily will guide guests, seated cabaret style, through the history of beer and brewing while calling upon all of their senses in a unique experiment.

If you’re not convinced that beer belongs on stage just consider that if a musical about cats can be an international phenomenon, an interactive stage production about beer is bound to be bigger than Avatar.

Called ‘Beer is Proof that God wants us to be Happy’, the show runs from April 28th to 2nd May 2010 at the The Studio, Sydney Opera House with tickets on sale from March 16th through Ticketek.
