Australia's International champion beer now available in Australia
One of the most frustrating aspects of the Australian International Beer Awards is that, in their quest to be big and international, there is no availability restriction for entries. While this does lead to a large number of international entries and does provide stiff competition for brewers, it really does little to generate excitement for beer in Australia. It’s a little like getting excited about the Academy Awards when you can’t go to a theatre or video store to see the winner the next day.
It is exciting to see then that the brewery that the international brewery that won both the Trophy for Champion Exhibitor and Trophy for Small Brewery is finally available on our shores.
Hailing from California, Moylan’s Brewing Co. beers have been available in limited quantities, most recently in the last BeerMason’s pack, but after 14 months of chatting, waiting patiently and trying to convince Moylan’s to export their small batch, limited stock beers to Australia, beer importer Northdown has finally secured a deal and the first shipment is here.
Check with your local better bottleshop for stock in the new few weeks.

Brendan Moylan, brings more than 30 years of brewing experience to Novato, which began with his first home brewing kit one year after college..
“One January I went out and bought the Christmas gift I really wanted: a beer brewing kit, and one thing led to another” says Moylan.
After taking extension classes on brewing techniques at UC Davis, Moylan became a founding partner in Marin Brewing Company, which opened in April of 1989. Back then there were around 100 brewpubs across the country. Today, there are more than 2000.
Brendan, of Irish heritage, later moved from San Francisco to Novato and in 1995 Moylan’s Brewing Co. opened, bringing Novato into the ranks of other world class brew towns like Portland Oregon and Seattle Washington. Moylan’s is a small microbrewery (20 barrel, batch capacity) designed and built from scratch. All beers are brewed on site, where the Brewpub features a 57 foot long bar, a dart room, an open fireplace and a reading library; featuring brewing books and magazines from Brendan’s personal collection.
Moylan’s beers have won global recognition with gold medals and trophies in the Great American Beer Festival, The California State Fair, Best of The West, North American Brewer’s Association, U.S Beer Tasting Championship, World Beer Championship and the World Beer Cup. In 2011 Moylan’s entered the Australian International Beer Awards, which are the largest beer awards held annually in the world (1195 entries are received from 34 different countries). Moylan’s Brewery was awarded the highest honour; the Champion Exhibitor Trophy and the Trophy for Champion Small Brewery, while also obtaining 5 medals.
“We are very humbled by this incredible honour,” Brendan Moylan said.
With limited stock and very high demand in the craft beer circles across California and the world, it has taken over a year to get the first shipment sent to Australia. After a patient wait, Moylan’s has arrived.
Enjoy!
Irish Red Ale 6.5%
A rich ale recipe from the Homeland, Moylan’s Irish Red Ale is malty sweetness in liquid form. A low hop profile (of Yakima Valley Glacier) dances above the massive barley character (loads of Crystal and Vienna malts are used), creating an invigorating aroma and caramel character that will compliment most foods. Its deep amber radiance has been described by our brewer as the most visually enticing beer. Hearty and luscious, this brew is what keeps those Irish Eyes A’ Smilin’!
Ryan O’Sullivans Imperial Stout 10.0%
Originally brewed to withstand the long voyage from London to Czarist Russia, Imperial Stouts are rich, thick and intense. Named in honor of our St. Patrick’s Day Piper, Ryan Sullivan’s Imperial Stout brings chocolate truffles, espresso coffee, burnt currants and the sweetness of sherry to mind. This is the classic “Cigar Stout”. Ten different barley malts are used in the grain bill complimented by big US hops; Glacier and Chinook.
Hopsickle Imperial IPA 9.2%
“In celebration of the Hop. . . . This is a “Hop” tribute, worthy of a King’s Imperial Court! Enjoy the blast of fresh Cascade, Simcoe, Columbus, Ahtanum, and Chinook hops as they stimulate the taste buds in a truly Imperial Fashion. Extremely bitter and resiny, your mouth will be left tasting pine and grapefruit for a long, long time. Pucker Up!
