Biggest beer in Australia axed
NT Draught, commonly known as the ‘Darwin Stubby’, will no longer be brewed on a regular basis, Carlton & United Breweries has confirmed.
The Darwin Stubby was born in 1958 and has had a somewhat iconic status in the Territory.
“At over two litres, it was certainly the biggest beer in Australia, if not the world,” a CUB said in a statement.
“In recent times however, it’s become a product people pick up as an item of interest or souvenir rather than being a beer made for general consumption.”
“We’ve looked at many options to keep the Darwin Stubby alive on a full time basis, however due to decreasing volumes and increasing costs associated with such a special, niche product, continuing to brew it on a regular basis just didn’t add up.”
CUB said NT Draught is likely to be added to its run of heritage beers.
“Many of our iconic heritage brands just don’t stack up to be produced all the time – in fact part of the romance of heritage brews is being able to choose different brands to roll out every now and again for special events, customers and fans of the brands.
“We’ve done runs of beers like Ballarat Bitter and Brisbane Bitter in the recent past and we have two heritage brews due out soon.”
